It is definitely going to need some "killer" apps to gain any ground. Not necessary third party though. Or maybe a strong marketing campaign? MS should get Kim Kardashian to start using it, then they would be set! :-)

The social features won't need to be Series 7 specific (E.G. facebook API).

<a href="#comment-1754" rel="nofollow">@Eric Kaufman</a>
Hopefully I'll be able to finish the post with my reasons soon. I'm not too worried about Microsoft being able to get developers on board for the phone. The developer story they've put together is pretty amazing and they've made it about as easy as possible to write applications for the phone. One of the guys I was with had made one before the end of the first session after the keynote.

The problem they will have is getting consumers on board and all the cool social features in the world won't mean jack if none of your friends have the phone too. For a good case study take a look at the Zune.

Bryan,

Nice Post! I might disagree with you about the 7 Series Phone. Really you are comparing to the iPhone, no? You can beat the Chicken and Egg problem if you innovate correctly (As done by Apple twice). Microsoft is really marketing the phone as a social networking hub, something the other phones have yet to achieve and really this is at the core for what a phone is used for. This could push them over if done properly and well received.

Also, development will be easier on the 7 Series Phone IMO, because of a better framework, languages (SL or XNA compared to Objective C), and better tooling. Apple platforms are pretty much a pain to develop for all around, no multitasking, app review process, Objective C is awful etc.

Microsoft could get a few big players on board, maybe appeal to game companies to reuse code with XNA and have a lot of eggs.

The real test I think will be how Apple Responds, they have yet to add any worthwhile features since version 1.

Hope all is well buddy!
